There remained, however, traces. Traces able to feed the suspicion that the polyphony and counterpoint were born in Muslim Spain, when Europe lived in the darkness of the Middle Ages, in complete regression (the barter system had replaced the money and very few could read and write) while in Spain there were open to all universities and where the arts were considered the highest level at which a man could aspire to (at the time).
